Why pests surge once the rains start
The monsoon changes pest behaviour across Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Pune in three ways. Water fills the drains, sewers and outdoor voids where cockroaches and rodents normally live, so they move up into buildings. Standing water in terraces, planters, coolers and construction pits creates fresh mosquito breeding sites within days. And weeks of high humidity keep timber, plaster and stored materials damp, which suits termites, silverfish and wood borers.
That is why a treatment that held all summer can appear to fail in July. The pests are not resistant — the pressure from outside has simply increased.
Before the rains (May to early June)
- Seal gaps around pipes, drain outlets, window frames and door bottoms — the routes rodents use first.
- Get drains and manholes treated, and fit gratings or one-way drain covers.
- Repair leaking taps, seepage patches and blocked chajjas so damp does not build up indoors.
- Clear stored cardboard, old newspapers and unused wooden furniture from lofts and store rooms.
- Book a preventive treatment so gel baits and residual sprays are already in place.
During the rains (June to September)
- Empty and scrub any container holding water once a week — mosquito larvae need only a few days.
- Keep kitchen platforms and sink areas dry overnight; cockroaches need water more urgently than food.
- Check the underside of wooden skirting, door frames and cupboards for mud tubes or blistered paint.
- Report rodent droppings or gnaw marks early — one pair breeds faster than most people expect.
- Ventilate and dry wardrobes and store rooms on the few dry days to slow silverfish and fungus.
After the rains (October onwards)
Post-monsoon is when infestations that established quietly become visible. A follow-up inspection catches new cockroach harbourages behind appliances, termite activity in damp walls, and rodent nests in ducts and false ceilings before the winter breeding cycle.
